I’ve just found out that Talkers Magazine, the Bible of the talk radio industry, has rated me number 45 on their Heavy Hundred list. You can view the entire list here.
This is a list of the top one hundred hosts in America out of the thousands that are doing talk radio. The hosts listed in front of me are almost all syndicated host and a few are morning drive hosts in major markets.
I believe it was around 1997 (I may be off a year or two) when I became the first Philadelphia talk show host to make the list. It was a thrilling achievement for me, both personally and professionally, when I received that issue of Talkers with my name and picture on the list (yes, back then most magazines were in print and not just online). Surprisingly, most of my co-workers at WWDB Radio shrugged off the accomplishment or made snarky remarks; of course, the station ended up going out of the talk radio business, which, looking back, was probably not a surprise.
After having the privilege of working in talk radio for over 20 years, it comes down to two important principles:
1. Appreciate every single listener, even those who vehemently disagree with me.
2. Support the sponsors who pay the bills and make this show possible.
Every day I wake up and get to do something I truly love. I work hard every day to make sure that comes through on the air.
What I value most is the community of listeners, Facebook friends, Twitter followers, Insider Club subscribers and blog readers that have come out of my radio show. I often joke about “DomTown, USA” as this imaginary common-sense hamlet that could give Garrison Keillor’s “Lake Wobegon” a run for its money. But your support and friendship makes “DomTown” a very real and very vibrant community, so thank you!
I also owe a great deal to Master Eric Strain and DJ for their support and producing. It is amazing that Master Eric’s calm and steady demeanor brings a bit of “Downton Abbey” to the rough and tumble world of talk radio. Who knows, he may refine me yet!
It’s a privilege to talk to all of you on the air every day. Thank you for being part of my community. I never forget that you have embraced me in every battle and celebration.
